When the local Farm Fresh store closed, Stephen Todd, a Virginia Beach resident with Down Syndrome, was out of work. However, Stephen, with the unconditional support of his family, turned this setback into an opportunity. Inspired by their love for bluebirds, they started Bluebird Beach Bungalows. This initiative quickly grew from a hobby to a passion for Stephen and his family.

Crafting Homes for Bluebirds

Bluebird Beach Bungalows creates birdhouses from reclaimed wood donated by the local community. Each birdhouse is a work of art decorated with sea glass, shells, and other treasures found on the beach. The birdhouses are assembled by Stephen and his team of friends with disabilities, who take pride in their work. Each artist signs their birdhouses, adding a personal touch to these beautiful creations.

Giving Back to the Community

The birdhouses are sold for $15 each, and all profits go to selected charities. Each month, a different organization that helps people with intellectual or developmental disabilities is chosen to receive the proceeds. Since 2019, Bluebird Beach Bungalows has made more than 5,000 birdhouses and donated over $100,000 to multiple non-profits. This grassroots effort operates with a Facebook page, word of mouth, and local media coverage.
